Three Vigilantes Killed, Several Security Operatives Injured As Bandits Ambush Team In Kwara

A deadly confrontation between armed bandits and security forces in Gada Woro, along Patigi Road near Gbugbu town in the Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, has left three vigilantes dead and several security operatives injured.

The incident, which occurred on June 30, 2025, began after bandits reportedly challenged local vigilantes to confront them near Gbugbu.

According to eyewitness accounts, the vigilantes responded to the provocation, accompanied by soldiers and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS). However, the security team was forced to retreat in the face of the bandits’ superior firepower.

Those confirmed dead include Mohammed Nma Dsuru from Kokodo village, Yanda Doctor from Lafiagi, and Ndagi Saraka from Edogi village. One vigilante remains unaccounted for, while multiple soldiers and DSS personnel sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire.

The attack has heightened fear and anxiety among residents, who are calling on security agencies to step up efforts to secure the area and prevent further violence.

In response to the deteriorating security situation, the Gbugbu International Market—a key commercial centre in the region—has been suspended until further notice.

Market leaders stated that the decision was made to safeguard the lives of traders and customers.

Residents of Lafiagi, Kokodo Village, Gada Woro, and the Gbugbu community are gripped by fear and are urgently calling for a stronger security presence and proactive measures to prevent further attacks.

"We are at the mercy of these bandits," said a resident, who wished to remain anonymous. "We need the security agencies to come to our aid and protect us from these terrorists.”

The incident marks the latest in a growing wave of bandit attacks across Kwara State, which has recently witnessed a sharp rise in kidnappings and killings. While the state government has pledged decisive action to tackle the escalating security crisis, many residents remain sceptical of its promises.

Amid ongoing uncertainty, communities continue to hope that authorities will implement concrete and practical measures to protect lives and restore peace to the region.
