The five police officers who were brutally killed in an ambush by suspected gunmen in Sabon Sara village, Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State, were laid to rest on Monday.

The spokesperson for the State Police Command, Ahmed Wakil, confirmed the development in a statement sent to PUNCH Metro.

In an earlier statement released on Sunday, the command identified the fallen officers as DSP Ahmad Muhammad (SID), ASP Mustapha Muhammad (10 PMF), Inspector Amarhel Yunusa (10 PMF), Inspector Idris Ahmed (10 PMF), and Corporal Isah Muazu (AKU).

Wakil had also confirmed the deaths of the officers who, in his words, “paid the supreme price” during the ambush, which also left two other officers, Inspector Isah Musa (SID) and Inspector Yusuf Gambo, with varying degrees of injuries.

“As we work towards the actualisation of a crime-free state, the unsavoury activities of criminal merchants desperate to make a living at the expense of law-abiding citizens have put us on the chase,” Wakil stated on Sunday.

Announcing the burial rites for the fallen officers, Wakil issued another statement titled, “Tribute to Our Fallen Heroes”, in which he wrote, “With deep sorrow, we gather to honour the brave police officers who were tragically ambushed during a weekend duty.

“Their bravery and sacrifice will always be remembered. These courageous men stood firm in the face of danger, answering their duty with pride, resolve, and a strong dedication to protecting our communities.

“Their loss reminds us of the daily courage our officers show to keep us safe. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go to their families, friends, and colleagues. May God grant them strength during this tough time, and may the souls of our heroes find eternal peace.

“Today, we honour their bravery. We celebrate their service. And we hope their patriotic and dedicated legacy continues to motivate us all.

“May their memory forever comfort and inspire us, and may Allah give the families strength to endure this irreplaceable loss and bring peace to all who mourn.”

The tragic attack occurred less than three days after another police officer was confirmed dead in the Federal Capital Territory while repelling gunmen attempting to abduct residents.

The ambush also came amid separate reports that suspected kidnappers invaded Zalau, a village in Toro LGA of Bauchi State, late on Saturday, where they allegedly attacked and killed a man and abducted his wife and daughter.
