Two separate accidents that occurred along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the Sango-Ijoko Road on Wednesday left five people dead and three others injured.

PUNCH Metro learnt on Wednesday from the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, that the first accident occurred when a head-on collision between a truck and a tricycle along the Sango-Ijoko Road on Wednesday left three people dead and three others injured.

Akinbiyi noted that the accident happened at about 6 a.m. when the truck dangerously overtook another vehicle and collided with the tricycle.

He noted that the impact of the collision led to the death of three passengers of the tricycle while three others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Akinbiyi said, “A fatal RTA/RTC occurred in front of Gasline Junction along the Sango-Ijoko Road.

“It involved a MAN Diesel truck with the number plate FST 424 XZ and a TVS tricycle with the number plate AYE 795 VC.

“According to an eyewitness account, wrongful overtaking and dangerous driving by the driver of the MAN Diesel truck, in the process, caused a head-on collision with the tricycle with six passengers onboard.”

He noted that seven people were involved, three people died, and three others were injured.

“Seven people were involved, three people died, and three people were injured. The presumed dead were deposited at the State Hospital morgue, Ifo.

“Two injured victims were rescued to Faith Hospital, Ogba-Ayo, by TRACE operatives, while the remaining one was taken to Babcock Hospital, Ilisan.

“Traffic was seriously affected, but with the intervention of TRACE operatives from Ijoko Command, the road is now free, and normalcy has been restored,” Akinbiyi concluded.

In another statement on Wednesday by the spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun State Command, Afolabi Odunsi, two people were killed when two trucks collided along the Ibafo area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday.

Odunsi blamed the accident on brake failure and speed violation.

He noted that four people were involved, while two people died.

“Four people were involved; nobody was injured, but two people were killed. The vehicles involved are two unregistered Mack trailers.

“The team arrived and rushed the injured victim to AZ Hospital, Magboro. The hospital eventually called to say that the victim had passed.

“The FRSC operatives and men of the Nigeria Police were on the ground, and the traffic situation was managed till the vehicles got removed from the road and custody taken by the men of Ibafo Police Division,” Odunsi stated.

With the yuletide season approaching, the growing wave of fatal accidents across states has heightened concerns over road safety measures.

PUNCH Metro reported that no fewer than 87 people have lost their lives in 1,006 accidents across different parts of Lagos State between January and September 2025.

Road safety and traffic officials have repeatedly warned that the “Ember Months” often record higher fatality rates due to motorists’ disregard for safety rules, use of intoxicants, and night driving hazards.
