The community, notorious for cult rivalries and other social vices, was thrown into disarray on Tuesday morning when armed policemen reportedly carried out a reprisal raid.

Anxiety has spread through the Amarata area, a suburb of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, after reports emerged that a police officer identified as Oboh Goodluck was killed on Monday night.

The community, notorious for cult rivalries and other social vices, was thrown into disarray on Tuesday morning when armed policemen reportedly carried out a reprisal raid.

Residents said the officers stormed parts of the area, shooting indiscriminately and breaking into homes.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, alleged that several people were forcefully arrested during the operation.

“Two people were forcefully taken away from my mini estate, a businessman whose wife works in the bank, and another young man who was with Bayelsa park,” one of the residents said.

“The police broke into houses, and men and women were taken into custody by force.”

Other eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as families fled their homes to escape the gunfire. They recounted how windows were shattered during the raid, adding that the community now lives in fear of renewed violence.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Bayelsa State Command, Mr. Musa Mohammed, confirmed the killing of an officer, giving his name as Oboh Goodluck.

He said an investigation is ongoing to arrest the suspected killers.

Community leaders have appealed to both residents and security operatives to exercise restraint, warning that any further escalation could trigger a broader breakdown of law and order in Yenagoa, the state capital.
