The National Coordinator of the Federal Workers Forum (FWF), Comrade Andrew Emelieze, has been freed by the Department of State Security Services (DSS) in Ibadan, Oyo State amid growing public backlash.
SaharaReporters learnt on Wednesday morning that Emelieze was released by the DSS after days of incarceration.
According to sources, Emelieze's arrest is linked to the planned nationwide protest scheduled for July 1, which aims to demand payment of the minimum wage and other allowances.
One of the sources had described the arrest as "tyrannical" and called for Emelieze's immediate release.
"This arrest is tyrannical. The DSS must release Andrew immediately! #RevolutionNow," the source had stated, expressing outrage over the detention.
The Take-It-Back Movement (TIB) had condemned the “unlawful and arbitrary” arrest of Comrade Andrew Emelieze, by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Ibadan, Oyo State.
According to the Take-It-Back Movement, Emelieze’s arrest is an attempt by the Nigerian government to stifle constitutionally protected rights to protest and assembly.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) had also issued ultimatums to President Bola Tinubu’s administration over the delayed implementation of a new national minimum wage, which remains a contentious issue between the government and organised labour.
