Nearly R9 million taxpayers money has been spent on purchasing 11 cars for President Jacob Zuma’s wives.
The cars are :
1.Four Range Rover SUVs.
2. Two Land Rover Discovery SUVs.
3.Two Audi SUVs.
4. Three sedans.
The luxury SUVs were bought, using the Police Department’s budget, between 2013 and 2016, at a total cost of R8,6 million.
Police minister Nkosinathi Nhleko , said Nhleko said the cars were bought to provide “comprehensive protection of VIP spouses.”
Parliament was critical of the purchases.
“This amount of money could have funded 116 university students for a year, it could have been used to hire an additional 61 police officers for a year,” Member of Parliament Zak Mbhele said.
The state reportedly spent R15.7 million last year on the presidential spousal support unit, but it’s expected to come down to R10.2 million this financial year.
